Ceylon sapphires
Ceylon is the historical trade name for Sri Lanka. Listings here are declared as Sri Lankan origin by the supplier, and marked as documented only when a laboratory report supports it.
Where Sri Lankan sapphires come from
Most production is alluvial, worked from gem gravels in and around Ratnapura, Elahera, Balangoda and other districts in the wet zone. Stones are typically cut locally, which is why many listings carry native or good cut quality values rather than precision cuts.
Origin on the listing
The origin field records what the supplier declared, plus a region where they gave one. Because origin determination is a laboratory opinion based on inclusions and trace elements, we only display the lab-documented label when a report is attached and names an origin. Without it, the listing says supplier-declared, and so does the API.
