Reading a coloured stone laboratory report

What a corundum report does and does not tell you: identity, treatment, origin opinion, and the limits of each.

A laboratory report for a sapphire or ruby usually states the species and variety (natural corundum, sapphire), weight and measurements, a treatment finding, and sometimes an origin opinion. Each of these has a different level of certainty.

Identity and weight

Species and variety are determined by standard gemmological testing and are reliable. Weight and measurements should match the listing; small differences can come from re-cutting or rounding. If they differ materially, ask before reserving.

Treatment

Findings such as 'no indications of heating' or 'indications of heating' are laboratory conclusions from inclusion features and spectroscopy. A report predates any later treatment, so date matters.

Origin opinion

Geographic origin is an opinion based on inclusion suites and trace-element chemistry compared against reference collections. Reputable laboratories say so on the report. This platform records origin as supplier-declared unless a report is attached and names an origin; only then is a listing labelled lab documented.
